The new cruiserweight division needed a bright star as its inaugural champion, someone to drag the division into the new era and immediately make the championship belt seem like the most important thing on the planet. It needed a smash hit, a can't-miss option. Instead, it got TJ Perkins.

Now this isn't meant to be a slight on TJ Perkins. TJP has been around the block a number of times and is referred to as wrestling's youngest veteran for good reason. He is a damn fine professional wrestler, but it is difficult to deny that he isn't exactly thrilling.

Many companies have been reluctant to go ahead with Perkins as their top guy, so WWE choosing him to spearhead the new cruiserweight division seems truly puzzling. WWE had an abundance on options, yet it went with its blandest.
