When WCW introduced its cruiserweight division way back when, the reason for its popularity was how darn special it was. As a young fan, until Juventud Guerrera, Rey Mysterio, Super Calo, and Psychosis arrived I'd never seen springboards, 'ranas, and the rest. They brought something brand new to the table, and stood out as a result.

In 2016, this simply isn't the case. In 1996, you weren't going to see Hulk Hogan or Lex Luger perform anything high-octane, but in the modern age highly athletic wrestling is the norm. Suicide dives are spammed to the point of irrelevance with the big boys. Why would I be excited about Rich Swann doing it?

In the years the cruiserweight division was absent, we've seen the style brought into the main event by Daniel Bryan, Seth Rollins, CM Punk, Rey Mysterio, and more. Cruiserweight wrestling isn't special enough in WWE to justify an entire division anymore.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
