10 Reasons Why WWF Vs WCW Invasion Angle Failed

9. Triple H's Leg Injury Really Came At The Worst Time

The best performer in WWE in 2000 was Triple H. Heading into 2001 he was still as good as anybody in the world as the biggest heel in the company. There weren't any heels that were close to him for a lot of his run during that period. While WWE did turn Steve Austin heel, it wasn't easy for him to get booed. They stuck Triple H with him and for a couple of months the "two man power trip" had success as a duo until Triple H tore his quad muscle in May of 2001 and was out for about seven months. Looking back on things now, it's pretty clear that WWE could have really used Triple H during the Invasion angle. His presence would have been a big factor in things because if WWE wanted to continue booking Austin as a heel then Triple H would have made sense as a natural babyface rival that was there to defend WWE. Hunter actually beat Austin at No Way Out 2001, so they had a ready made feud for that summer. If WWE felt the need to turn Austin back into a babyface, Triple H would have succeeded as a leader on the WCW side of things too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrcVqnIa0rA Part of the reason the Invasion failed was that WWE didn't have enough stars on Austin's level to compete against him. The Rock was away for some time filming a movie and WWE kept them apart until the final WWE/WCW showdown at Survivor Series later in the year. Guys like Benoit and Jericho main evented King of the Ring 2001 with Austin, but neither was really seen as a top guy by that point. They needed to develop still. Angle was there although he was still pretty new too. If Triple H was around in the second half of 2001 he would have been a huge difference maker in terms of the on screen product. Maybe he could have talked some sense into his future father-in-law Vince McMahon because there were many instances where McMahon made the wrong decisions during the angle. Hunter was always somebody that had his ear, so perhaps something could have been done to change things.
