When WWE was first assembling the teams for the Mixed Match Challenge, one of the major selling points was the odd couple pairings that would fill the tournament field. These are performers who would never normally work together and will almost certainly not be paired again once the dust has settled on the tournament.

There's certainly an intrigue to seeing a babyface and a heel join forces with each other - more on that later - but it's also strange to see performers from disparate corners of the roster working in the same ring.

Alexa Bliss and Braun Strowman are nominally heels - or at least they were when the bracket was put together - but they would never exist in the same segments on Raw. In the Mixed Match Challenge, though, they are one of the most entertaining tandems, complete with their own double team finishing move.

The joy of the Mixed Match Challenge is in watching performers that have been seen on television for years, working slightly outside of their characters in ways that make for compelling in-ring excitement and fun social media product. It's incredibly silly, but that's what wrestling is all about.
