2. Battleground 2013
Maybe there's just something about the name "Battleground." After the controversial finish at Night of Champions 2013, the WWE Championship was held "in abeyance" (because "vacant" is too old-school a term for Vince McMahon). It was decided that the two most recent champions - Daniel Bryan and Randy Orton - would once again battle for the right to hold the title. Prior to the bout, there was pressure on The Big Show - who had been coerced into joining The Authority - to "do the right thing." As Orton and Bryan battled for the championship (but before the match had a chance to get good), Show came to the ring, attacked the referee, and punched Bryan out. Scott Armstrong ran down to help give Orton the win, but Show had a change of heart, knocked him out, and finally punched Randy Orton. The show ended with only The Big Show standing tall, and no WWE Champion. With an undercard that featured CM Punk versus Ryback and The Real Americans versus Santino Marella and The Great Khali, the show was a ripoff to every fan who spent $44.99 on it (this was a few months before the WWE Network launched). The show's only saving grace was a tag title match pitting The Shield against Cody Rhodes and Goldust, but it wasn't enough to stop Battleground from being voted the Worst Major Wrestling Show in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter's 2013 awards.
