Stephanie McMahon said a few years ago WWE would try and incorporate LGBTQ characters into their storylines in a positive way, after some less than favourable cheap heat portrayals.

With Sonya Deville being openly gay, many hoped this would lead to a storyline with her and best friend Mandy Rose, starting a lesbian love angle between the two. On a promo for Total Divas, Deville had already disclosed that she and Mandy met with WWE producers to pitch that positive LGBTQ storyline. On Smackdown last year, teases were dropped for a romance between Mandy and Sonya when Sonya stroked Mandy’s hair, with them affectionately looking at each other. However, the scene was erased when WWE uploaded its weekly Smackdown highlights package to YouTube, with insiders claiming the storyline had been dropped.

A lot of people in WWE were actually relieved they didn’t go ahead with the angle, not believing the company could pull it off in any positive way. The story would have played out where Rose would have regularly teased Deville but then turn on her later, having manipulated her the entire time.

Rose revealed that she had initially pitched the romantic angle with Sonya while the two were in NXT:

“Yeah the lesbian angle was definitely an idea that we pitched ourselves. It was actually a while ago during our NXT days we thought about that. But, you know, things happen. Things change. Might be suited better for other people, whatever it may be. But, it all worked out, the storyline with Otis turned out really well as most of you would agree, so it is what it is with that stuff, right.”

It did turn out really well. WWE would have probably ‘Billy and Chuck’-ed the entire angle and now Mandy Rose and Otis are one of the best pairings SmackDown’s ever had.
