10 Regrets CM Punk Must Be Harbouring

3. Leaving the Company Abruptly

CM Punk has gone on the record countless times in the past in saying that he wouldn't be wrestling forever. Unlike a Ric Flair or Hulk Hogan, he wasn't going to be lacing up his boots up until an old age. He was going to call it quits on his own terms, but he never made it clear when that time was going to come. His lackluster run in 2013 seemingly sped up the process as Punk obviously wasn't pleased with much of what he was doing. His matches weren't up to par with what they used to be and it was only a matter of time before he gave his notice. In an exclusive interview with MMA Fighting's Ariel Herwani, Punk talked about his contract was set to expire in July and that he wasn't sure if he was going to re-sign or not. Many fans expected him to take time off, but no one thought he'd leave the company in the fashion that he did. The former WWE champion has been absent from WWE TV since January's Royal Rumble event and hasn't shown any interest in returning anytime soon. Had he stayed a few more months, he would have avoided all the things he's attempt to preventing now: the controversy, the constant questioning as to when he'll be back, the harassment and everything else. If WWE fans have learned anything in recent years, it's that no one stays gone forever if Bret Hart, Ultimate Warrior and Bruno Sammartino are any indication. Regardless of whether he was in the right, no one should ever leave in the fashion that Punk did. If the 2014 Royal Rumble ends up being his last match ever, it was a weak way to go out. Not the best way to close out the career of someone who referred to himself as the best wrestler in the world.
