10 Regrettable Wrestling Revamps
1. Typhoon - The Shockmaster
There are few names in the wrestling industry as infamous as The Shockmaster. Shocking by name, shocking by nature, the debut of The Shockmaster is as memorable as it is hilarious.
No stranger to gimmicks, Fred Ottman was the man behind the glitter painted helmet of The Shockmaster. While “glitter painted helmet” could be the title of a camp adult film in its own right, it pales in comparison to the other names he was given prior to WCW.
From Sigfried the Giant and Bubba the Belt Collector to US Steel and even Big Steel Man, euphemistic names were a theme of Ottman’s early career. Naturally, he would go on to his biggest success in the WWF as Tugboat. Ahem...
Nevertheless, by the time Ottman made it to WCW, things were going to change forever for the Natural Disaster as Ottman prepared to shock the world. No doubt about it, that he certainly did. Blasting through the set of Flair for Gold in 1993, The Shockmaster exploded onto the scene like a typhoon. Unlike a typhoon, everyone around broke down into hysterics that continues to this day.
Despite WCW’s attempts to roll with the punches and repackage him as a bumbling oaf, the image of Ottman hitting the deck, face first was immortal the moment it happened.
Truly shocking indeed.
