7. Bret Hart

Books could be written on Bret Hart's time in WCW and the genre would be horror.

After years in the wilderness, Hart's WCW career started to pick up in 1999.

He began the year as United States Champion and had one of the coolest moments of his career when he countered a Goldberg spear with the help of a hidden metal breastplate. Sadly, Hart would "quit" WCW immediately after this kickass spot. In reality, he was healing from a groin injury that he had been nursing since November the following year.

What was meant to be a May return was pushed back to September, as Hart's brother, Owen had died just before Bret was due to return to our screens.

Hart came back to wrestling in September 1999 and captured his first WCW World Championship two months later. Sadly, just one month later, an errant kick to the head from Goldberg gave Hart a severe concussion.

Bret didn't take the time to recover that he needed, wrestling on a full-time schedule for two months. His final match was against Kevin Nash in January 2000, after which he vacated his WCW title.

This injury would eventually lead to Bret stepping away from wrestling altogether; an ignoble end to one of the all-time greats.
