5. Ahmed Johnson

If things had gone differently, we could be talking about Ahmed Johnson in a very different light.

The Master of the Pearl River Plunge was being pushed as a big star in the mid-90s. He captured the Intercontinental Championship from Goldust in 1996, becoming the first African-American singles champion in the company's history.

Sadly, a string of injuries beginning in 1996 set Ahmed back massively. He was forced to vacate the Intercontinental title after kidney issues put him on the shelf for four months. This couldn't have come at a worse time for Johnson, as he had just become number one contender to the WWF Championship.

Ahmed returned with a much lower profile at the end of '96, but the WWF were still keen to push him as a top star. In mid-97, Johnson was scheduled to face The Undertaker for the WWF title at Canadian Stampede. However, Johnson missed his world title match once again when he suffered yet another injury.

The rest of '97 was a carousel of injuries for Johnson and by 1998, he was gone from WWF, never to return. You have to feel for the guy - a once-promising star turned into a footnote of wrestling history.
