10 Ridiculous Wrestling Gimmicks That Shouldn't Have Worked (But Did)

8. The Boogeyman

Portrayed by the green-as-Shrek Marty Wright, The Boogeyman was a kitschy ScyFy channel monster brought to life. Aside from crawling onto the stage and bashing a clock over his head, Boogey regularly chowed down on mouthfuls of worms, and famously gnawed a mole off Jillian Hall’s face.

It’s surprising enough that a group of seemingly able-minded adults actually colluded to produce this zany idea, and even moreso that it actually proved popular with the crowd. Boogeyman’s chief role was to gross-out his opponents and the fans themselves, and while he was never a particularly good wrestler, he more than succeeded in his overall mission.

Boogey’s performance skills were always on-point, and his success with the act landed prominent feuds with the likes of Booker T and JBL. Originally devised as a cartoon for Hulk Hogan’s Rock ‘N Wrestling, The Boogeyman was thrust towards the top of SmackDown’s card almost immediately, such was his popularity.

Wright was 40 years old when he debuted on WWE TV. Perhaps if he was ten years younger and a better wrestler The Boogeyman would’ve lasted longer at the top of the pile, but he undoubtedly made his mark on WWE from 2005-2009.
