10 Ridiculous Wrestling Gimmicks Which Are Actually TRUE

6. The Maestro

Although he was the grand-nephew (yes, that's a thing) of industry changer Gorgeous George, Robert Kellum was restricted from trading on his own legacy during his late-'90s WCW run, owing to Randy Savage's bizarre insistence his valet take the name of his wrestling idol. There was no arguing with the Macho Man - or, specifically, his creative control clause - and so the Smoky Mountain alumni brainstormed with Eric Bischoff to devise something else.

They landed on The Maestro, a gimmick which saw Kellum don a cape and wave a conductor's baton around, whilst his own valet Symphony (Alicia Webb, better known as Ryan Shamrock) hung off his arm. The idea was composed out of Kellum's legitimate musical theatre background; a trained pianist, he'd previously starred in Shakespearean productions including Macbeth and Hamlet, and reckoned the road to stardom lied in becoming an evil opera impresario.

Unfortunately, it didn't see him hit any high notes; he mostly exchanged victories with Ernest Miller before his contract expired in early 2000, after which the curtain fell on The Maestro. No encores.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
