1. Bayley
Ignoring the dubious way that Bayley began life as a character in NXT two years or so ago, and theres no doubt that her ascent to the NXT Womens Championship has all the hallmarks of a classic underdog storyline Its the story of two years of gradual building, two years of organic growth in the eyes of the fans to the point where Bayley was one of the most over babyfaces on the roster - if not the most over. Bayley was an innocent who became experienced, but who never lost the core of the character that everyone had loved to begin with. You couldnt help but root for her. You couldnt help but will her to win every time she got into the ring. As much as Zack Gowen was a greater underdog in the ring; as much as the Daniel Bryan yes movement was more melodramatic and grandiose; as much as the 1-2-3 Kid delivered a genuinely surprising, crowd-pleasing storyline; theres something about Bayley. She was constantly portrayed as being on the back foot like Gowen (if youll forgive the expression), but with Bryans connection with the crowd. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWeIEnarXss And Bayley lost. She lost a lot - she was beaten up, betrayed and humiliated, and because the fans loved her, they felt every bruise and every tear along with her. All of this pain built up Bayleys backbone over time, but it didnt change her. She chose to remain a nice person: the nicest person, in fact. She chose to remain Bayley. Developing a core of steel to reinforce her sweet-as-apple-pie, huggable exterior, Bayley became the champion the fans had wanted Daniel Bryan to be.
