When Vince McMahon and other WWF higher ups met Marc Mero's wife Sable in 1996, the wrestler's top line aspirations in the company were arguably doomed from the start. To everyone, Mero was standing in the shadow of his partner, Sable was the one drawing the most attention.

In a podcast interview for The Ross Report, Marc told Jim Ross that he was aware of this at the time. After a few years of failing to crack the main event picture, Mero returned following injury and was remodelled as 'Marvellous' Marc Mero in 1997. The new boxing gimmick was supposed to give Mero a harder edge, for the purpose of turning him heel.

Jealous of the spotlight Sable was grabbing, Marc began to abuse his relationship with the woman. This infuriated fans, leading to a wonderfully heated match between the pair at Over The Edge 1998. Short but sweet, the bout proved that Mero could cut the mustard as a villain.

It's true that Mero's best heel run came as fodder to his super-over wife. Still, his part in Sable's rise is sorely under-rated.
