Pushed aside whilst Vince McMahon tried to turn Lex Luger into the next coming of Hulk Hogan, Bret Hart remained a workhorse throughout 1993. His King Of The Ring victory sparked a feud with Jerry 'The King' Lawler, and the pair were set to collide at SummerSlam.

Emerging for the bout with an elaborate car crash story, Lawler hobbled on crutches and claimed to be injured. Thus, he sent out his 'court jester' Doink The Clown to face Hart for him. Surprisingly, what resulted was a solid wrestling match. Underneath the circus grease paint and cartoon leanings of the gimmick, Doink (when Matt Borne played the character) was under-rated inside the ring.

After Bret won by disqualification, Lawler entered the fray and had a short scrap with his rival. In turn, the 'King' won by DQ when Hart refused to relinquish his Sharpshooter hold. The whole ordeal was tremendously dramatic, setting the scene for more matches down the line.

On the surface, Bret vs. Doink looked like a throwaway encounter, but it was wholly enjoyable and really well worked.
