Many were left dejected when Christian dropped the World Heavyweight Title to Randy Orton mere days after Extreme Rules 2011. His victory had been a sweet one, the retired Edge even shedding tears as he watched his real-life friend live out his dream. As a babyface, Christian had legs, but WWE felt he would be more effective as a crybaby heel.

Turning rogue shortly after losing the gold, Christian embarked on a lengthy feud with Orton over the title. At SummerSlam, both men found themselves in the shadow of CM Punk vs. John Cena. Even a No Holds Barred stipulation couldn't overcome the 'Summer Of Punk' craze that was ongoing.

Still, Christian and Randy pieced together a fantastic showing. There weren't many of their matches unworthy of a World Title prize, Orton and Christian had great chemistry immediately, but SummerSlam was arguably the apex of their rivalry.

As a dirtbag defending champ, Christian excelled in the role. Similarly, fans began embracing Orton once it became clear that his foe was so good as a villain.
