On the 3 August 2020 episode of Monday Night Raw, Shane McMahon introduced fans to his latest concept for the third hour called Underground. Much like Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport, the idea was that competitors from rookies to legends could square off in worked shoot fights. While this might have been fruitful for someone else, that didn’t mean it worked out for the ‘Billionaire Boy Wonder.’

There were a few entertaining moments, such as Dolph Ziggler showing off his mat skills, but by large what ensued were a series of aimless Fight Club-inspired vignettes filmed in some kind of smoky basement that had magically disappearing dancers.

The concept polarized WWE fans, with some of them pointing out that its inclusion on Raw unravelled some of the few traces of kayfabe left in the sport. Why would Ziggler be able to take down these gritty fighters on Underground only to have his ass handed to him on regular programming? It hardly made sense, especially if you were one of the new viewers the company tried to attract.

Nonetheless, WWE gave Underground a half-assed try, and near the very beginning, MVP announced that “until further notice” The Hurt Business’ran ‘Shane O’Mac’s’ testosterone-driven fever dream. Of course, that idea soon petered out much like the segment itself without any “further notice.” And that was that.
