10 Shocking WWE Plans You Won't Believe Almost Happened
6. The Main Event Plan For WrestleMania XV
WrestleMania XV is famous for showcasing the first WrestleMania confrontation in the rivalry between The Rock and 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin. The original plans for the WrestleMania XV main event were originally very different though. Instead of a Rock/Austin collision, the WWE had planned to make the main event a triple threat match between The Rock, Austin and Mankind for the WWE Championship.
Then on-screen WWE Commissioner Shawn Michaels, who was also working creatively behind the scenes, suggested to bookers that the match should be a classic singles bout. It is speculated that Michaels was lobbying Vince McMahon to have Austin removed from the main event and replaced with Mankind.
Unfortunately for Mick Foley, bookers agreed with Shawn to make the main event a singles match but at the expense of his place in the main event itself. So as the WWE looked forward to The Rock/Austin main event, Mankind was left to enjoy his WrestleMania XV moment in the midcard wrestling The Big Show.
If the triple threat had have gone ahead it would have made the Rock/Austin dynamic significantly different. Who wants to live in a world where we don't have three Rock/Austin 'Mania main events?
