10 Shocking WWE Plans You Won't Believe Almost Happened
3. The Doomsday Plans For The Streak
Prior to the shocking events of WrestleMania XXX, plans had existed for The Undertaker's Streak to end at the hands of a number of wrestlers.
At WrestleMania 21 The Undertaker was meant to team with Kane to wrestle Heidenreich and Gene Snitsky, but when 'Taker nixed this following months of horrible matches with Heidenreich, Randy Orton got the nod to face The Deadman and was originally booked to break the streak. Orton eventually refused to proceed with this plan out of respect for The Undertaker, forcing WWE to look for other wrestlers more willing to do the unthinkable.
Mark Henry was at one time lined up to break the streak at WrestleMana 22, which would fit in with Kurt Angle's claim that he was asked to break the streak then instead of wrestling Big Evil in a match at Now Way Out 2006. Angle and Henry either rejected the poisoned chalice or WWE creative thought better of it.
Five years later three men were at least pencilled in to defeat The Undertaker at WrestleMania XXVII. Sting was approached by the WWE but turned down the offer citing his well-known disapproval of how WWE had treated its acquired WCW talent when it bought its rival in 2001.
Interestingly, WWE talks with Sting had developed to such an extent that WWE had acquired the rights to play a Metallica track during WrestleMania. When they fell apart, WWE swapped Sting's theme "Seek And Destroy" with "For Whom The Bell Tolls" as part of Triple H's entrance instead.
Plans also existed for The Nexus leader Wade Barrett to defeat The Undertaker at WrestleMania XXVII after he had assaulted 'Taker at Bragging Rights 2010. The plans fell through as the heat of Nexus and Barrett had cooled substantially prior to the start of the Road to WrestleMania at the beginning of 2011.
Finally, following their infamous UFC confrontation, it is widely believed that The Undertaker was working with the WWE creative team to set up a WrestleMania XXVII match with Brock Lesnar in which Lesnar would end up winning and thus end the streak. He'd have to wait a few more years to get his victory.
