We can joke about this now. After six years, it just about satisfies the time plus tragedy equals comedy formula, and in any case, Bryan is currently preparing to make some brand new WrestleMania memories, having at last been declared fit to compete.

If you had been on the internet in 2012, however, you'd have seen fans be far less magnanimous about it. They had just seen their boy get humiliated on arguably the biggest night of his career to date, suffering a desperately disappointing 18-second defeat in the show's very first match.

You could perhaps claim that Bryan only made for such a weak opponent because he was dazzled by the beauty of AJ Lee, his ringside cheerleader for the evening with whom he shared a quick kiss before the match. But, in the long-run, that just made him look like even more of a fool.

Fortunately, this is now merely a footnote in his career. In 20 years' time, fans probably won't even talk about it all, so obsessed will everyone be with his epic career versus career match with The Undertaker at WrestleMania 45.
