Bret Hart was nearly five months into his first reign as Intercontinental Champion when he began to consider other career options - including a jump to WCW. As a result, the company decided to take the belt off him as soon as possible. Though fans at the January 17, 1992 house show in Springfield, Massachusetts, were told that Hart had the flu, it was just an excuse to justify his loss to someone not seen as on his level.

That someone was The Mountie (Jacques Rougeau), who lucked into his first WWE championship (and his only singles title in the company). Only two days later, though, he had to defend the championship against Hart's ally, Roddy Piper, at the 1992 Royal Rumble. With an opponent who wasn't suffering from a kayfabe illness, The Mountie didn't put up much of a fight. Piper beat him in under six minutes, putting an end to what was, at the time, the shortest Intercontinental Title reign ever.
