5. Mick Foley Takes 11 Chair Shots to the Head
To date, there have only been 15 "I Quit" matches in WWE history. And much like Mick Foley's work in the Hell in a Cell, it was his work in this match type that was by far the most brutal (unless you mean brutal from a pure quality standpoint: then you'd pick Vince McMahon vs. Stephanie McMahon).
Foley had performed countless crazy stunts his entire career. He was always one-upping himself, even though no one else could even compare to the bumps he was constantly taking; he was in a league of his own. At Royal Rumble '99, he finally went too far, even for the WWF's taste. Who would have guessed, though, that it would be The Rock who put a bigger beating on him than perhaps any of his other opponents?
Chair shots to the head are virtually banned in the major promotions right now, but even if they do happen, the wrestlers are sure to put their hands up to absorb the blow. Foley didn't have that luxury at the Rumble, as his hands were handcuffed behind his back. During his match against The Rock, he took 11 unprotected shots to the head, which is exactly 11 more than is humane. To make matters worse, he took these in front of his screaming wife and children who were watching their father beat senseless in front of a cheering audience. In the end, Foley didn't quit from any of these shots (or even after being electrocuted); it was a previously recorded audio clip of him saying "I quit" that eventually did him in. Thankfully for the sake of future performers, WWE quit doing this level of unnecessary extreme action.
