10 Small Details Wrestling Still Can’t Get Right
8. Count Outs
Another problem with the humble wrestling referee is that they seem to count wrestlers out of the ring when they can be bothered. Other times, they don't worry about it and let brawls happen willy-nilly without penalisation. This spoils the credibility of the count in the first place.
Count outs are supposed to give each worker 10 short seconds to regain their composure and re-enter the ring for combat. It's a simple, effective idea, one that should create tension when a babyface is struggling to make it back in time. That illusion is shattered when refs take 60 seconds to count 10.
At Crown Jewel, Tyson Fury's "TKO" (count out) victory was sullied by the fact that the official couldn't be arsed counting he and Braun Strowman out earlier in the match. Consistency is key here, but referees are rarely, if ever, consistent. Those five counts they employ to warn wrestlers against disqualifications are similarly stretched.
Rules mean nothing when those enforcing break them first.
