The 2012 Royal Rumble is rarely remembered as one of the best iterations of the match, and the addition of all three members of its commentary team certainly contributed to its mediocrity. Booker T had also entered the previous year to a strong response, and of the three was by far the most fitting addition to the match. Jerry Lawler and Michael Cole, on the other hand, had very little business in the battle royal. Despite his obvious contributions in Memphis and as a commentator in the Attitude Era, Lawler was well past any in-ring ability and Michael Cole should never have even been considered as an addition to the match. This one is an unpleasant reminder of the commentary-centric period of time where Cole vs. Lawler was pitched as an intriguing feud for fans. Looking back, it's even more difficult to decipher just how this seemed like a good idea. Given that commentary today is still as insipid as ever, it's a relief that it's at least not infecting the in-ring product as much as it once was lets keep the commentators behind their desk this year.
