2020 hasn't been a pleasant year for many, but it's been particularly troublesome for SmackDown's Elias.

After being launched off a balcony and having a guitar broken over his back by 'King' Baron Corbin, it looked like things were looking up for 'The Drifter' during the Intercontinental Championship tournament. Beating Corbin in the first round, a semi-final against the eventual winner AJ Styles was next up for the instrument wielding wrestler.

That was until he found himself caught in the middle of one of the most controversial WWE angles in recent history.

In reality, Elias had genuinely suffered a torn pectoral muscle which required surgery and a lengthy spell on the sidelines. Yet, instead of simply revealing he'd picked the injury up in a match, WWE made it look like his pain was the result of a hit-and-run accident involving Jeff Hardy. This would then kickstart a fairly uncomfortable programme with Sheamus which centred around Hardy's past issues with drugs and alcohol.

With Elias stretchered away in dramatic fashion, he now looks set to miss the rest of the year due to his legitimate injury.

Though any normal human being would likely press charges against another person for attempting to kill them with a vehicle, expect Elias to return in 2021 and challenge his attacker to a parking lot brawl.
