10 SummerSlam Matches That Almost Happened

In 1991 Ric Flair shockingly made the move to the World Wrestling Federation, bringing the Big Gold Belt with him in the process. Flair was the biggest star in the NWA and WCW at the time, so to say this was big is quite the understatement. Flair would win the WWF Championship at the Royal Rumble in 1992, but was gone by the end of the year.

Professional wrestling would have been a completely different place had Flair made the move in 1988, as he very nearly did. It was the first SummerSlam and Vince McMahon was looking for the biggest fish to throw on this summer barbecue. Flair was the man he wanted, with a big WWF Championship match in the works against then champ 'Macho Man' Randy Savage.

It came close, but Flair felt that he was obliged to the NWA and decided against making the move. Instead we got Savage teaming with Hulk Hogan (The Mega Powers) to take on André the Giant and 'The Million Dollar Man' Ted DiBiase (The Mega Bucks).

Everything was a bit mega in the 1980s, you see.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
