10 Superstars Most Responsible For WWE's New Boom Period
With fan interest and critical acclaim rising, WWE is standing on the shoulders of giants.
Like Hansel, WWE is hot right now.
That is undeniable. Ticket sales are through the roof. TV Ratings are as high as they have been in years. The buzz around the company is something that has been missing for a long time.
It's quite surprising, too. When Vince McMahon was axed last year due to his atrocious behaviour, fans were excited for Triple H to take the creative reins. Although not the most exciting booker in the world, he was at least a logical one, and it wasn't by accident that NXT became so revered under his control. 'The Game', for all his faults, understands the process of booking, and WWE started to make sense.
Gone were the last minute edits or complete rewrites of the show. That was replaced with functional and at times, thrilling booking. The idea that this list of wrestlers have become so popular in spite of WWE booking is foolish. That process was true under Vince's regime, but with 'The King of Kings' in the hot seat, these superstars have been carefully booked and manoeuvred into their spots and all of them have run with the ball that has been thrown to them.
Who knew that good booking, with attention to detail and consistency to the characters, would yield such fantastic results?
Everyone except Vince McMahon apparently.
And thankfully for this list of wrestlers, he's been kept away from their rise to superstardom.
10. Drew McIntyre
After failing to live up to the hype of being Vince McMahon's 'Chosen One' in the early 2010s, Drew McIntyre has been a revelation since his return near the end of that decade.
A whistle stop tour in NXT soon saw him on the main roster as Dolph Ziggler's villainous muscle, and slowly but surely he began to connect with the crowd. An out of nowhere babyface turn saw the Scot become a red hot favourite for the Rumble in 2020 and just before the wrestling world had to close its doors, he became the hottest act in the company.
McIntyre gets nowhere near enough credit for steering the ship through the pandemic period, and he was a calming and brave presence on TV as the WWE Champion. He lost the belt before the fans flooded back and despite being such a rock for the company, they booked him in bad feuds with poor outcomes, to the point which he was booed by the crowd.
But the former two-time WWE Champion is a bulletproof main eventer, and you need only see the reaction he received when he returned at Money In The Bank, to tease another five star classic with GUNTHER, and his subsequent appearances since. A fired up, invested 'Scottish Warrior' is an asset to the company and if the rumoured heel turn happens, they will have another must see villain in their ranks.
