The Big Show wasn't the only wrestler to benefit from Rob Van Dam's Wellness Policy suspension. He wasn't even the first. RVD dropped his WWE Championship exactly one day before kissing his ECW Championship goodbye.

Edge was the man who picked up the WWE Championship. He beat RVD and John Cena in a triple threat match on the July 3, 2006 episode of Raw. It was Edge's second WWE Championship and it came at a critical time for the Rated-R Superstar.

Edge had a brief WWE Championship reign earlier that year, having cashed in the first ever Money in the Bank briefcase on Cena. After losing his rematch with Cena, Edge was only hovering around the main event picture. His momentum could have stalled completely if Cena had to chase RVD all summer, as originally planned.

Edge taking the title off of RVD allowed the former to reignite his main event feud with Cena. Edge was the man being chased in the summer of 2006, leading to some classic matches and his own version of the spinner WWE Championship belt.

Edge's second WWE title reign was a huge step in solidifying his status as a main event player that could be part of any championship feud at any time.
