10 Superstars Who Gained The Most From WWE's Wellness Policy
5. The Big Show
The Big Show was in one his career lulls for the first half of 2006. He teamed up with Kane for a bit and got his first WrestleMania victory, but his singles career lacked direction. Paul Heyman scooped him up for the ECW revival, but even Heyman could not have planned what happened next.
Rob Van Dam had beaten John Cena for the WWE Championship at ECW: One Night Stand in June 2006 and been awarded the ECW Championship soon after. Then, Van Dam and Sabu were arrested for marijuana possession, earning Van Dam a 30-day suspension.
WWE quickly through together a storyline in which Heyman turned on Van Dam and helped Big Show pin RVD for the ECW Championship on July 4, 2006. That temporary fix was extended when the ECW brand's other top contender, Kurt Angle, was suspended under the Wellness Policy that same summer.
As a result, The Big Show ruled ECW as its champion from July 2006 to the December to Dismember pay-per-view five months later. It was a significant singles push that came at a time when Big Show really needed it. It was also another chance for the reliable veteran to show he was always ready to step up when called upon.
