10 Superstars You Forgot Competed For A World Championship On WWE PPV
1. Farooq – Vs. The Undertaker For The WWF Championship (King Of The Ring 1997)
This match really symbolized the lack of talent depth the WWF suffered from, during this period of the Monday Night Wars. Bret Hart was injured, as was Vader, therefore, Vince and co. were forced to gamble on some different stars in the wake of such key forced holes in the roster.
No disrespect to Farooq, as Ron Simmons always cut an intimidating figure throughout his legendary career as a trailblazer for African-American wrestlers. Not only this, but winning the WWF Championship, would have certainly added greater prominence to the controversial militant Nation of Domination faction.
But once again, there was far too much doubt that Simmons stood a chance of unseating The Undertaker as company top dog. With this match taking place in the build to Kane’s debut, ‘Taker battled blackmailing from Paul Bearer, at the centre of the company’s biggest angle, so it was highly unlikely he would lose his championship here.
Undertaker vs Farooq was a rudimentary affair, hardly demanding a rewatch. The NOD leader dominated the contest, largely due to handy interference from stablemates, but they would eventually be Farooq's undoing. A distraction by an arguing Savio Vega and Crush, provided ‘Taker with a slight window of opportunity to hit the Tombstone Piledriver and retain his belt, defeating the most forgettable world title challenger in WWE PPV history.
