10 Superstars You Forgot Competed For A World Championship On WWE PPV
7. X-Pac – vs. The Rock for the WWF Championship (Capital Carnage 1998)
Capital Carnage 1998 was a glorified house show on British shores, yet The Rock vs X-Pac for the WWF Championship was a solid if not spectacular title encounter. Also, this match boasted a strong presence of historically relevant sub-plots, adding intrigue to a re-watch.
Here we saw X-Pac’s lone World Championship match on WWE PPV. A timely fact considering Sean Waltman will soon achieve his second WWE Hall of Fame induction, as part of the NWO. Additionally, this was the first time The Rock defended a World Championship on PPV, after turning heel and winning the belt at Survivor Series three weeks prior, thus becoming The Corporation's leading man.
Sure there were also some bizarre aspects at play. Namely, that Capital Carnage was held just one week before the Rock Bottom: In Your House PPV, an event which didn’t even feature European Champion X-Pac on the main show. Not to mention, the red and black attire the diminutive D-Generation-X member brandished in this contest, as opposed to the classic green and black colours.
All things considered, this was a fun champion vs champion bout, let down by its DQ finish when Triple H attacked The Rock. However, the piping hot crowd were intensely invested in the babyface challenger pulling off the unlikeliest of upsets, but alas, Dwayne escaped with his gold.
