10 Superstars You Forgot Competed For A World Championship On WWE PPV

3. Jerry Lawler – vs. The Miz for the WWE Championship (Elimination Chamber 2011)

It was midway through this match that Michael Cole chastised the Oakland fans in attendance, for getting behind Jerry Lawler in The King’s quest for his maiden WWE Championship, labelling it “enough is enough”. An ironic call, considering Raw became borderline unwatchable during Cole’s horrendously irritating heel run, of which his feud with commentary colleague Lawler was a key highlight, or lowlight in most fans memories.

What is even more remarkable, is that during this WWE Title match, it becomes clear that Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler in early 2011, was perhaps the company’s most likeable and organic babyface character. Lawler, whose mother had just passed away, looked to culminate his mini-feud with WWE Champion The Miz, by accomplishing his two greatest unachieved career goals: to become WWE Champion and compete at WrestleMania.

With the crowd definitely behind the Hall of Famer, Memphis’s biggest wrestling icon gave a great performance, in what was a tense but well-paced old-school battle, high on drama and featuring a great story behind it.

Whilst not up to the standards of their bells and whistles TLC match for the gold on Raw a couple months earlier, The Miz continued his cowardly run as the heat magnet champion, and Lawler added one final great bout to his long list of career highlights.
