Heading into WrestleMania 34, there really wasn’t much doubt that this match would somehow take place, but WWE still kept it in doubt even into the beginning of the PPV.

For several weeks before WrestleMania 34, John Cena repeatedly called out the Undertaker, challenging him to a match at Mania. (What is it with Cena and constantly not having a path to WrestleMania? You’d think the biggest star of his era would be able to get on the card with a word.)

Cena upped his criticism of Taker to try to goad him into responding. It failed, so Cena went to Mania “as a fan,” and he enjoyed the kickoff show and first couple matches from the crowd, posing for photos and even drinking a beer. But upon receiving word the Deadman was there, Cena hopped the barricade and raced to the back.

Shortly thereafter, Cena came out for his long-awaited WrestleMania match against Taker, but it was nowhere near the epic struggle we might have wanted several years prior. Instead, Taker squashed Cena in less than three minutes, bolstering his Mania record to 24-2 and giving fans a really cool entrance. Other than that, it was something that happened and isn’t really referenced these days.
