10 Tag Teams That Should Never Have Worked (But Did)
7. Heath Slater & Rhyno
Another half-baked, thrown-together tag team, Heath Slater and Rhyno joined forces in the wake of the 2016 WWE Draft. Slater, a 'free agent,' was desperate to win a SmackDown contract, and needed a partner to enter the brand's upcoming Tag Title tournament. Rejected by everyone he approached, the former 3MB ringleader eventually found an unlikely ally in the gruff, beast-like Rhyno, and a compelling underdog story was born.
Often booked like a laughing stock, Slater was (and still is) a solid in-ring competitor with considerable comic chops, but he has rarely transcended jobber status. Rhyno had the brawn to compliment his wackiness, and while it initially looked like the team were only paired to fill out the blue brand's ranks, they surprised everyone by becoming the inaugural SmackDown Tag Team Champions at Backlash 2016.
Slater was transformed from a career-long enhancement talent to a genuine, believable fan favourite, while Rhyno, who was considered a spent force prior to the angle, enjoyed a rare Indian summer. They held the gold for just under three months, and while the duo's push declined considerably in the aftermath, they remain active on Raw and Main Event today.
