10 Terrible Iterations Of Legendary Gimmick Matches

9. Shark Cage Match

Now I’ll be the first to admit that, at face value, a Shark Cage match sounds pretty awesome. However, the image that those words might conjure up in your head is probably slightly different to the match that this one would turn out to be.

The contest in question involved Chief Jay Strongbow and “Bulldog” Don Kent and while there was indeed a shark cage involved, that in itself was the issue: the entire match took place inside a structure that can’t have been more than about 4 feet in diameter.

While WCW’s World War 3 may have suffered from spatial limitations, this match took things to a whole new level.

Naturally, pinfalls weren’t an option, due to the impossibility of lying down in such a small space, and so escaping the cage was the only win to win. However, the door must have been a little dodgy, as it was seemingly refusing to remain closed.

For Strongbow and Kent, that just made the difficult job of putting on an exciting match in a tiny shark cage all the more tasking still.

That being said, I’ve refrained from placing this one any higher on the list on account of the fact that it happened roughly 40 years ago. Perhaps it was a novel idea for its time. Through today’s eyes, though, it doesn’t make for pretty (or exciting) viewing.
