The Intercontinental Championship is going through something of a rough patch at the moment (if by rough patch you mean the last 15 years of its existence), but feuds like this one showed that fans yearn for a reason to care about it.

In the fall of 2016, Dolph Ziggler was so desperate for another chance to hold The Miz's belt that he put his entire career on the line, agreeing that he would retire from the sport of professional wrestling if he did not emerge victorious from their match at No Mercy.

The pair then shared one of the year's great matches, comfortably stealing the next morning's headlines despite being billed third on the card behind the WWE Championship triple threat and the Randy Orton-Bray Wyatt main event.

It all seemed fine, until the storyline abruptly became pointless (and not just pointless, but a malignant type of pointless) when The Miz won the title back a month later. Dolph, it seemed, put up his livelihood for absolutely nothing.
