Prior to Adam Cole's WWE debut in August 2017, he was closely linked to Cody Rhodes through their allegiance to Bullet Club. Cole and Rhodes had represented the acclaimed faction on a handful of occasions, most notably seeing off SCU's Christopher Daniels and Frankie Kazarian - then named the Addiction - in February of that year. They were great together, making it a shame that we never saw more of them as a tag team.

By 26 May 2017, Bullet Club was out of the picture.

Just over a week after Cole was ousted from the Club, he challenged for Cody's Northeast Wrestling Heavyweight Title. Taking place at the Newburgh stop of the company's Spring Slam Tour, the pair wrestled a 17-minute banger, going down as the second-longest defence for Cody in his reign as NEW's top champion. Cole failed to dethrone him, just as Bobby Fish, Ricochet, and Jerry Lawler (!) had, too.

This was the only straight singles match between the two, though this isn't much of a surprise considering they were aligned in the same stable for the majority of their time in the same scene. Such a match shouldn't be overdone to maintain its aura as a legitimate dream match.
