The one drawback about historical stories is that theyre written from the point of view of the winners. The narrative that WWE likes to spin is that the rise of the Attitude Era is what turned the tide of the Monday Night Raw. And the WWE is correctto an extent. The assumption is that WCW lost its hold on the ratings in 1998. Thats not quite accurate. For many weeks throughout 1998, WCW beat WWF in the ratings on Monday Night. The ratings would go back and forth between the two companies for most of 1998. One of the major dates where WCW handily beat WWF in the ratings was on July 6 when Goldberg defeated Hollywood Hogan for the WCW Championship in the Georgia Dome. The last time WCW beat WWF in the ratings was on October 26, with Nitro getting a 5.1 and Raw getting a 4.5. The next week, the WWF would get the lead and never relinquish it.
