10 Things Everybody Gets Wrong About ECW

4. Joey Styles Worked Best Alone

When he was asked to be, Joey Styles was a one-man tour de force behind the commentary desk. His voice is synonymous with the original ECW, and with good reason. Phrases like his exaggerated "Oh My God" have become legendary thanks to his stunning passion for the product and unparalleled ability to work solo.

Was he strictly better on his own however? Hmm. Perhaps not.

Partners like Joel "known as your daddy in 50 states" Gertner and Cyrus (The Virus) were marvellous complements to Joey's strait-laced personality in the booth, especially towards the end of ECW's run. With Gertner, Styles had someone he could get along with. With Cyrus, there was a bit of that old Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan argumentative couple dynamic.

Ignoring the work Joey did with a commentary partner is dismissive of how brilliant those other announcers were at enhancing Styles' relationship with the viewer. Besides, it sounded like Joey was having more fun with a colour man there to wind him up.
