10 Things I Hate About Triple H
1. He’s Not Our Guy - He’s The Guy
“Well, here we are. Just the three of us.”
Of course, these are all backstage matters, and all of our information on such matters comes from third parties: from former WWE performers like Bret Hart, CM Punk and Scott Steiner to former WWE members of creative, writers and bookers.
Wrestling fans tend to take these things very seriously, following their favourites to the extent that they’ll really have it in for anyone who seems to be ‘burying’ them, or preventing them from reaching a spot on the card that they think they deserve.
I’m a huge CM Punk fan, and it rankled when Triple H went over him at Night Of Champions in September 2011, considering that any and all received booking wisdom said that Punk should go over to capitalise on the heat he had before it slipped away… but really, does it matter?
The fact is, Triple H wasn’t our guy growing up: he wasn’t really anyone’s guy. Vince McMahon may love his son-in-law to pieces and trust him with the future of the company, but when he was a full time wrestler there were other people that Vince wanted on top.
People loved The Rock and Foley, loved ‘Stone Cold’... but no one truly loved the Game, not in that way.
He was never our guy - but he made damn sure that he became the guy. And this is pro wrestling: that’s something we should have learned to accept by now.
After all, it’s all about The Game, and how you play it.
