10 Things I Hate About Triple H
2. The Political Hit Theory
“When you stop to smell the flowers, are they afraid?”
For months, a conspiracy theory has been doing the rounds, claiming that there was opposition to Vince McMahon’s single-minded drive to get Roman Reigns over as the company’s top babyface and heir apparent to John Cena’s position on the card. Specifically, that Triple H wasn’t as high on Reigns as Vince was, and wanted that top spot reserved for one or more of his hand-picked stars from NXT.
Some point to the fact that Reigns himself is a graduate of NXT, but he’s not really - Reigns was mostly involved in developmental when NXT was FCW. He’s Vince’s guy, not Hunter’s guy.
The theory goes that all of Reigns’ appalling booking over the last year or more has been orchestrated by Levesque, whose need for validation requires that no one be more over than he is.
That would explain the weird heroic babyface vibe that Triple H kept playing off whenever he faced off against Reigns, which made Reigns look like the bad guy.
That would also explain why he's happy with John Cena as the face of the company, since his polarising effect had already split the WWE crowd vote: Cena would never be seen as more over than Triple H.
That's would also explain why he's diverted plans for WWE’s developmental area into the creation of a critically acclaimed shadow promotion within WWE… and why he continues to run two disparate characters on WWE television within the same continuity, one badass cool heel authority figure on RAW, and one fatherly babyface authority figure on NXT.
Like most conspiracy theories, it’s a stretch… but, like all the best conspiracy theories, it fits most if not all of the known facts and explains events that, as yet, have no other explanation.
I mean, are we to believe that Roman Reigns has been booked into the toilet through sheer incompetence? Surely not.
Most damningly of all, however: those people who dismiss the Political Hit Theory do so largely because they believe it’s too complicated to have remained a secret.
No one seems to believe that Paul Levesque is incapable of acting in that kind of scheming, manipulative, underhanded manner.
