10 Things Learned From Eric Bischoff's 1994 Timeline Of WCW
7. WCW Were The First To Run Live Interactive Show
In July, 1994, World Championship Wrestling ran a live edition of WCW Saturday Night. The show was normally taped, but this extra special broadcast was designed to try and lure viewers in with the illusion of control. During his conversation with Sean Oliver, Bischoff says WCW was the first wrestling promotion to offer fans the chance to vote live on matches. As it turned out, the episode pulled in an incredibly dismal rating. After all the effort to engage fans, the telecast only drew a 1.8 TV number, which was very much a colossal disappointment. To make matters worse for Eric, during the show one of his teeth became dislodged, and flew out towards the camera as he was announcing. Shockingly, nobody noticed at the time, but Bischoff reveals that he's had fake teeth since his teenage years. The main event of the show ended up being Sting vs. Ric Flair, but the core concept of the live vote didn't resonate with WCW fans. Perhaps the idea was ahead of its time, because WWE would end up doing something similar years later. The 'Cyber Sunday' Pay-Per-View premise was largely the same as what WCW had put on in 1994.
