10 Things We Learned From JBL On Talk Is Jericho

7. The Origins Of His Characters & The APA

Initially JBL debuted as Justin "Hawk" Bradshaw, after coming to WWE as John Hawk. Layfield pitched Justin Hawk as an alternative to Vince's preference of Justin Bradshaw, and finally a compromise between the two was reached. A brief stint as one of the New Blackjacks went nowhere before being paired up with his buddy Ron Simmons. Vince saw the two hanging out at the bar drinking and shooting the breeze and decided he wanted to put them on TV being themselves, thus they went from being the Hell's Henchmen known as The Acolytes, to the Acolyte Protection Agency, a duo of beer drinking hellraising *ss kickers for hire. The gimmick was a big hit and the team was good for a stiff match and a fun time. JBL was Layfield's own creation, but Vince never like the idea of a JR Ewing type character, but the company needed someone to main event against Eddie Guerrero for the world title in 6 weeks, so they debuted JBL and thrust him to the top of the card immediately.
