10 Things That Must Happen In NJPW In 2018

6. Put Some Effort Into The Tag Team Division

NJPW’s heavyweight tag team division has been a problem for many years now.

The division is overly reliant on gaijin teams, and Gedo has this irritating tendency to book the same multi-man matches over and over again. It started immediately following Wrestle Kingdom 11, and continued through the autumn with War Machine, Guerrillas of Destiny and current champs Killer Elite Squad.

The winter World Tag League is the least interesting tournament of the year, and that is because of how negligent the company has been with that division. There is plenty of talent, and there is no reason why the belts shouldn’t mean more. It doesn’t need a complete overhaul, it just needs a little bit of care.

SANADA and EVIL will challenge for the titles at Wrestle Kingdom 12, and they could be just what the division needs. Satoshi Kojima and Hiroyoshi Tenzan can’t fight the clock forever, and big native teams are sorely needed. Pit the Los Ingobernables duo up against Goto/Ishii, G.O.D, Death Juice and others, and a division may well begin to form.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
