10 Things That Will NEVER Happen In AEW

5. Impromptu Matches

To further build on that point, you won't see impromptu matches in AEW, either, because why would you?

There are segments scheduled for later in the night, on a show promoted in advance as something that could feasibly happen, as opposed to "an empty slot a few of these tossers will eventually fill by bickering at length in patently scripted segments you can't f*cking believe have been a thing for literally two decades at this point".

AEW has teased an impromptu match just once, and even the threat brought on a sort of existential crisis. The Best Friends challenged FTR for a match right now a month or so back, and even though it didn't happen, the suggestion that it could well have, had the heels not chickened out, was an ultra-rare lapse in formatting.

It's yet another residual Attitude Era trope that only worked in a specific context. Of course you wanted the Rock to open the show. You even wanted, as incredible as this may read in 2020, for some hapless prick to interrupt him because a classic verbal incineration was imminent. This approach used to work - anything adjacent to sport or the olden days was wildly unpopular fare pedalled by the weird NWA invasion that contrived to make the New Midnight Express seem equally as old as the old Midnight Express - but it works no longer.

You won't see it in AEW because a pre-announced line-up forms part of the sporting vibe most deliberately ignore.
