10 Things That Will NEVER Happen In AEW
4. Giving Up On Tag Team Wrestling
It's not just WWE that has given up on the idea of promoting tag team wrestling as a drawing attraction.
Though they have; for years now, driven, apparently, by the idea that it is far more cost efficient to pay two main event talents than four, Vince McMahon just doesn't hold an interest in tag team wrestling, nor a belief that it will draw money. And so we've arrived at a place where there are literally more odd couple teams in WWE than actual cohesive units that enjoy tagging. It's all totally backwards, but again, this isn't just one of Vince's harebrained foibles: for many years, NJPW booker Gedo has shrugged at that form, and lazily recycled the same pairings in frequent reruns. The division has little depth, and the storylines are very limited. It's a tug-of-war more than it is an overlapping field with a distinct tier. NJPW presented the best wrestling product of the best decade, but the World Tag League felt so inessential year on year on year.
This will not happen in AEW.
EVPs the Young Bucks won't allow it to happen. The story they are telling now - they are reimagining the division in their image to piss FTR off at a distance - covers at least the next half-year.
EVP Kenny Omega loves, excels at and made his name in the tag genre.
EVP Cody's best WWE work was within the tag ranks, and he is, alongside President Tony Khan, a giant wrestling nerd keenly aware of its dormant value.
Barring a complete and hugely unlikely shift in management structure, tag team wrestling is back, and it's here to stay.
