10 Things TNA Wants You To Forget About Abyss

3. The Last Rites Match

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YOIeTZf1Ww In retrospect, almost all of Abyss' long-term storylines wound up being ridiculous. The big guy's rivalry with Sting would provide his sole world championship, but also such career lows as the Last Rites Match. In true TNA fashion, they took an existing gimmick match and made it pointlessly complicated. In this case, it was a casket match, except that you couldn't win until you put your opponent in the "DEATH BED" and wheeled them up to the ceiling with a pulley rig. TNA officials helpfully provided the competitors with dime store Halloween decorations as weapons, most notably a plastic candelabra that caused Sting's head to gush blood despite Abyss hitting him in the stomach with it. The match notoriously garnered angry chants of "Fire Russo", despite it actually being a Dutch Mantell brainchild. Still, it's probably telling that even TNA, innovators of such stipulation-lousy stinkers as the King of the Mountain Match and the Reverse Battle Royal, haven't dusted the cobwebs off of this one.
