By late-1998, a photographer and journalist called Blackjack Brown was telling The Dudley Boyz that WWF officials wanted to take a look at them. Bubba and D-Von weren't sure whether or not to believe that, but it turned out that Blackjack was telling the truth - he set up a three-way between Bubba and Vince Russo the next year.

Things progressed quickly. Russo said he wanted to set up a meeting between The Dudleyz and Jim Ross, so both ECW stars knew they had to sit Paul Heyman down to clue him in. They had a plan: Bubba and D-Von told Heyman that they'd stay put if he upped their nightly payoffs by one more dollar.

Paul E refused.

It didn't click until later that Heyman was actually doing business with Vince McMahon and had known all along that the WWF wanted his guys. Bubba smiled as he told Austin how Paul kept that quiet amongst the ECW locker room for a reason.
