10 Things We Learned From Chris Van Vliet's Interview With David Benoit
5. Blames Severe Head Trauma For His Father's Heinous Actions
In the intimate interview, Chris Van Vliet asked many hard-hitting questions that required David to reflect on the horrific family tragedy that occured in 2007. David was only 15 years old when his father, his wife Nancy, and his half-brother Daniel were found dead. He refuses to feed into the internet's conspiracy theories and instead placed blame on his dad's severe head trauma.
David Benoit firmly insists that CTE, a neurodegenerative disease caused by long-term and violent head injuries, is to blame for his father's uncharacteristically violent behavior.
"That wasn’t him man," Benoit said. "He would never do that. I know he wouldn’t. I think something went terribly wrong. The doctor said he had [Chronic Traumatic Encephalitis]. At the beginning, that somewhat gave me closure. He had CTE, so I don’t think that was him."
Benoit, who was 40 years old at the time of the infamous double murder-suicide, "had the brain of an 88-year-old with Alzheimer’s," according to David. "It blows my mind, man. All the chair shots he took, not protecting himself."
CTE, was the subject of the 2015 Will Smith sports-drama, 'Concussion.' The condition is believed to be the cause of many famous athletes' untimely deaths, specifically athletes who acted out of character before they died.
