10 Things We Learned From Dark Side Of The Ring: Doink The Clown

6. Why Matt Hated WrestleMania IX

Remember that iconic double Doink shot from WrestleMania IX? Matt hated it, because he thought Vince McMahon was trying to "set him up for failure". His substance abuse issues were spiralling further out of control in early-1993, and Borne believed the boss was prepping somebody to replace him.

That'd eventually happen.

Steve Keirn, who played the second Doink at 'Mania, assumed the role once Matt got fired. Michelle revealed to VICE that Borne was always uncomfortable with the double Doink gimmick, so he must've continued harping on that for years after the fact. That random paranoia wasn't uncommon, especially after hearing the bar fight story over nothing from Brian Blair.

It's sad to think that Borne hated one of Doink's most famous moments. If pressed, many fans of the time would point to that mirror image finish as one of the character's best, but Matt didn't agree. He could see himself being pushed out the WWF exit doors.
